World’s Largest Halloween Party is as clean & green as ever at the Louisville Zoo

Halloween at the Louisville Zoo

For the very first time, I went to what the Louisville Zoo has dubbed “The World’s Largest Halloween Party”. This is where 11 and under can dress up in their Halloween costumes and walk around the Louisville Zoo getting candy along the way. The zoo is decked out in all things Halloween and kid-friendly themes (The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland to name a few). Most of the animals at the zoo, however, are not visible during this time.

Besides seeing Spiderman, Cleopatra, a Ghostbuster and Scooby Doo I was once again amazed on the cleanliness of the entire zoo. Being clean and green is important here. For the Halloween party they say to “BRING YOUR OWN BAG! Kids! PLEASE help us be "green" this Halloween by bringing your own Trick-or-Treat Bag to the Zoo for this event.” This event at the Louisville Zoo runs until Halloween. Details can be found here.

The Louisville Zoo isn’t the only place throughout the U.S. where green is king. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and Green Halloween® have partnered to provide communities with healthy, animal-friendly and EEK-O-friendly Halloween events for the whole family. Green Halloween and AZA are providing trick-or-treaters with ways to celebrate that are healthy for them and their animal friends. Family- and Earth-friendly events are occurring at 50 participating zoo and aquarium locations.

Events and booths will show goblins and grownups how to apply the 3Rs- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- to Halloween activities to help create healthier traditions for kids and the Earth. For example, conventional candy will be swapped for healthier, eco-friendly treats, and families can participate in spooktacular recycled animal crafts and green costume contests.

Here are more details on how to be Green on Halloween.
