Guest Post: How to Choose a Solar Installer

Making the decision to install solar panels is an important one and requires great consideration. It is generally considered to be best practice to obtain at least three quotations in order to compare the offerings and consider which company would be right for you. Obtaining three quotes will also allow you to get a better understanding of the way that the company works and their procedures. There are several factors to consider when choosing a solar panel company:

MCS accreditation

The government-introduced Feed-in Tariff guarantees that energy companies will pay you for each unit of electricity that your system generates, regardless of whether or not you use all of it in your home. In order to qualify and to receive the tariff from your energy supplier, your solar panel system must be installed by a company which is accredited by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

How long the company has been around for

Although a company does not necessarily need to have existed for a number of years to guarantee that they are a good installer, choosing a well-established company can have several advantages. There have been reports in the media about solar panel companies which have gone into liquidation after completing installations which require large amounts of repairs. Selecting a company that has a string background as well as professional accreditations and with a strong history of previous installations ensures that you will receive the support that you need.

REAL

The REAL assurance scheme was founded by the Renewable Energy Association. If your installer is Renewable Energy Association Listed it guarantees a level of quality service and installation. All members agree to a strict consumer code. This qualifies a company which is REAL assured with a certain level of excellence as well as professional conduct.

Customer references

A reputable company will be happy to show you references and testimonials from satisfied customers. They should be able to provide you with examples of installations in your local area or of a similar type to yours. An installer that can easily present you with this kind of information should have nothing to hide and plenty of happy customers singing its praises.

NICEIC

Contractors who work under this scheme will be able to issue a safety certificate for their electrical work. If your contractor is NICEIC approved it means that they have been approved by the independent body, the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting. To become and remain approved by this body they will be subject to annual inspections to ensure that their standards of quality and safety are maintained.

Although these points can provide a guideline as to how to select a professionally excellent and reputable installer, you should also consider other factors. These include the size of the company, the choice and price of solar panels that they provide, as well as the warranty on the work and materials.
